Rozhlas

In terms of pure boldness of design; the National Slovak Radio Building: Rozhlas, is one of Eastern-Europe's defining modernist icons.

Just outside of Bratislava's prettified Old Town, the massive inverted pyramid represents the might of creative showmanship during the socialist period. Its groundbreaking design took over fifteen years to build and with its arrival in the mid-eighties, its interiors are awash with a hotchpotch of 60's ideals, 70's lines and 80's finishes.

Owned by the state, the buildings future is threatened as talks of a merger with STV, (the state owned Television Network) could see the eviction of Rozhlas HQ to a new location, with talk of developers seeking to build on its site.

The building is said to be quite difficult to work in, with its dated interiors, and tired edges, the pyramid and core-atrium design seem to allow only for maze-like walkways and dingy corridors.

With typical state bureaucracy and a dedicated troupe of security, ‘free-reign' access to Rozhlas is a rare treat.
